A couple of weeks ago a few customers noticed a pausing issues when using the DSL. This problem occured day and night every 10 to 20 minutes. Over time we were able to graph the issue, but it was hard to nail down the cause. In our attempt to fix this issue we upgraded our core router software last Tuesday with little improvement. Late Thanksgiving night we discovered the pausing was being caused by an internet worm. At 1:00 AM on the 25th we started filtering this worm and the pausing stopped.
After we upgraded our router we also discovered a problem in our usage graphing. We had under estimated the usage on the connection to the ATM by nearly 30%. At present our usage during the day time is reaching 95%. This is causing the DSL to feel sluggish at times.
To alleviate this issue we are installing an additional connection to the ATM. It is scheduled to be installed on Dec. 13th, 2005.
In addition, we are also converting customers from a bridged configuration to PPPoE which will improve routing. We will be contacting you in the coming days to reprogram your DSL modem for the new protocol.
