After changing out a dozen or so modems over the past couple days I discovered a trend. All PCTel HSP chipsets and all running Windows 98. So tonight I threw one of my customers modems into a Windows XP machine and dialed it up. Worked perfect! I then put the same modem into a Windows 98 machine. No connection, error 629. I could connect to the terminal login but it would fail attempting to complete the ppp connection. After some trial an error I found if I disabled compression in DUN it would connect fine. Hmm... could it be an issue with v44. Changed the ras boxes to only support v42bis and now I can connect fine.
This issue should be fixed. It has been a tough couple of days.
