Mail delay due to slowdown at virus scanner

Early this morning we notices a delay in email delivery. Now, mid morning, we're still seeing long delays, sometimes up to 5 hours. The virus scanner is dealing with the messages as fast as it can At present it has about 3500 messages waiting in queue. We are watching the issue and will report back when things improve.

Web mail isn't affected but outbound SMTP and inbound SMTP are delayed by the scanner.
